If this sounds like you: you have 10–20 years of experience, a real consulting offer, clients who trust you, and most new business still comes from referrals, LinkedIn or your network. You are not trying to become a creator. You want more of the right people to understand your thinking before the first sales call.
For an experienced consultant, starting YouTube from zero is less about “building an audience” and more about building a public body of evidence. Prospects already ask you the same expensive questions in calls, workshops and proposals. YouTube lets those answers exist before someone speaks to you.
What I would use YouTube for in your position
Pre-sales trust
Let buyers hear how you think through the problems they are already trying to solve.
Searchable expertise
Turn recurring buyer questions into videos that can keep working months after you record them.
Point of view
Make your judgment visible: what you disagree with, what people get wrong, and what you would do instead.
Sales leverage
Give prospects something useful to watch before or after a call instead of sending another PDF.
What I would not do
I would not start by trying to “post consistently” with generic thought-leadership topics. Your advantage is not frequency. It is specificity. Build the first 10–15 videos around expensive problems, buying questions, mistakes, trade-offs and decisions your clients already bring to you.
What success should look like early
Early success can be a prospect mentioning a video, a qualified website visit, a pricing/proof-page visit, an application, or a sales conversation where the person already understands your thinking. Subscriber count matters much less than whether the right buyer is moving closer to a conversation.
Questions I would answer before you start
Do I need an existing audience before starting?
No. An existing audience can help distribution, but a consultant can start from zero if the topics match real buyer questions and the videos are packaged clearly.
What if I am not comfortable being a “creator”?
You do not need a creator persona. The strongest format for many consultants is simply clear, direct explanation from someone who has seen the problem many times.
How much should I record?
Enough to sustain a repeatable cadence without hurting client work. The operating system should fit your business, not force you to become a full-time content person.
